We all have foods that we try to avoid, or not to indulge too much of, because we have a fear that they will cause an unsightly breakout. But does this have any merit? Can certain foods actually cause acne? If so, which foods are to be avoided?
Studies of the past have very inconclusive results as to whether diet can be a reason to blame for pimples, but there are many dermatologists out there that are very certain that certain foods definitely have an effect on your skin. Let’s take a look at the different foods and why they have led to this belief.
Refined Carbs
Let’s face it – most of us love our sugar bread, and pasta. Processed foods and refined grains cause your sugar levels to spike, which, in turn, results in an over production of sebum (oil) on your skin, which leads to clogged pores.
Instead of having bread and spaghetti for dinner, try having more veggies on your plate with a side of lean protein, like chicken breast.
Deep Fried Foods
Contrary to popular belief, it is not the fat in fried foods that cause acne, but it’s most likely due to the fact that most fried foods are highly processed carbs! Burgers, chicken wings, donuts are basically bread, batter, sugar, etc. As we’ve already discussed, stay away from refined carbs.
Dairy Products
Most Americans are encouraged to have some dairy in their diets, in the form of milk, cheeses and yogurts. Most dairy products we eat and drink are produced from pregnant cows’ milk, and when consumed by humans, the hormones passed along into our bodies can aggravate acne.
Instead of animal milk, try Almond milk, which I personally is way yummier than cow’s milk!
Chocolate
… And we can’t forget about chocolate! This is the food that almost everyone tells me they avoid to steer clear of pimples. Most of the chocolate that we enjoy have high amounts of sugar AND milk in it, which we’ve already discussed, can aggravate acne.
If you must indulge, do so moderately, and munch on dark chocolate.

So, there we have it. The connection between certain foods and acne. Before going out and trying out different acne treatments and acne products, maybe try cutting back or eliminating these foods first! Good luck!
