Marcelle Eyebrow Pen Review: Universal Light vs. Dark

We already know that I love brows. I love the way they can completely change the overall look of your makeup. Do I want a more dramatic and defined look, or am I wanting a softer, more natural look?

Marcelle recently came out with their Eyebrow Pen, and I had to try it! I was finally able to get my hands on some of these puppies, and wanted to try out both colours, “Universal Light” and ” Universal Dark”,  to see how versatile they are.marcelle eyebrow pen review

What the Eyebrow Pen promises:

-12 hour smudge-proof formula

-Hypo-allergenic, paraben and perfume free

The product is basically a marker for your eyebrows. It has a slanted felt tip that glides on the skin, and since it is a liquid formula, if you have grey hairs, the liquid will “coat” the hair and colour it for you also. I also found that the liquid also acted sort of like a gel or a clear mascara, it set the eyebrow hairs a bit in the direction that you used the pen in.

My eyebrows are naturally very sparse and thin, and I feel like it allows me the option to change them up from look to look. There’s one good thing about my naturally poopy eyebrows! ha ha!

I’m going to demonstrate how changing the shade you use for your eyebrows also changes the overall look of your makeup.

Let’s check out the shades!

As you can see, both shades look fairly natural with my brows. I could easily go with either shade for everyday wear.

I filled in my brows using the method I talked about in my eyebrow tutorial. Here’s a quick recap:

  1. Bare Brows!
  2. Using the Eyebrow Pen, line the top and bottom of the tail end of your brows.
  3. Lightly fill in the tail end to about the mid-point of your brows.
  4. Using an angled brush, pick up a powder product in a taupe or brown shade (I used bronzer!) and fill in the inner half of your brow, gently going over where you filled in with the pen to soften it up a bit.

Now let’s see how the different eyebrow shades can enhance the makeup look you’re wearing:

I used the “Light” shade for a softer, doe eyed look. As you can see, the brow colour does not look off on me (even though I have dark hair). I find this shade gives my brows a softer, more natural look, while still being defined.

Universal Dark

I wore the “Dark” shade with a more sultry, heavy liner-ed look. You can tell that the darker shade definitely adds more drama, without looking way too overdrawn or fake looking on me. We don’t want no blocky lookin’ brows!

Thoughts on the product:

This definitely held up its promises of long-wearing and smudge proof brows. The liquid dried quite quickly, and once it was dry, your eyebrows were definitely not going anywhere until you wash ’em off!

Since it was in a marker/pen form, it took me a little while to  get used to using it. On me, since my eyebrows are SO sparse, I don’t think that I could get away with using the product to draw/fill in my entire brow. I tried it, and it looked way too unnatural. I tried using it the way I normally fill in my brows, and it looked SO much better. This isn’t the case for just this product, this is the case for pencils also (for me at least). I always prefer to fill in the inner end with a powder, it just works better for me!

I do think though, that if you have eyebrows with very thick hair, that you could use this by itself to fill in any sparse spots or gaps, and it would look natural.

Overall

I personally think I can pull off either colours. ha ha! But if you are unsure, stick to the “Universal Light”. If you have eyebrows with very fine hairs, make sure you use my method of filling in brows. It is just way more natural, and you won’t look like you drew on caterpillars above your eyes!
